About Amman

Jordan, a young country dense with history, full of natural wonders and historical sites, a well-travelled bridge between sea and desert, east and west. Situated just east of the River Jordan, it continues to be a bridge between ancient and new civilizations and an open air museum in almost all its entirety.

Jordan is a country for all seasons. In winter it offers therapy at the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth where "floating" rather than "swimming" is a unique adventure in the extremely saline and mineral rich waters.

Amman, the capital, is an ancient city, first known as Rabbath ‘Ammon in the Iron Age and later as Philadelphia which is one of several Greco-Roman cities in the urban confederation known as the Decapolis.

One of Amman’s treasures is the Roman Byzantine and early Islamic ruins on Jabal al-Qal’a (Citadel Hill); a 2C AD Roman theater built to hold 5,000 spectators, and an archaeological museum.

Northern Jordan is home to other ancient cities of the Decapolis. These include Jarash (Gerasa), Umm Qays (Gadara), Tabaqat Fahl (Pella), Bayt Ras (Capitolias), and Quwayliba (Abila). Jarash, straddling one of the ancient world’s key trade routes, offers extensive and breathtaking ruins of colonnaded streets, arches, temples, and baths in a remarkable state of preservation and completeness.

Umm Qays offers fascinating ruins; a stunning black basalt theatre, a colonnaded main street, a city gate and a museum in a restored Ottoman house, among others.

Within 2 hours driving, you can see lots of history and touristic sites:
Aqaba, Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash, Dead Sea, Bethany, The King's Highway, Ajloun, The Decapolis, Desert Castles, Irbid, Kerak, Shobak, Madaba, Mount Nebo, Pella, Machaerus, Ma'in, Salt, Umm Arrasas, Umm Al-Jimal, Umm Qais (Gadara)
